Etymology

Punjab has had many names throughout history depending on the ruling empire/dynasty and their language. But what they have in common is that they recognized it as the land of five rivers, because five major rivers flow through the Punjab region, Punjab was referred to as:

The Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers flow through the Panjnad River into the Indus River into the Arabian Sea.

History

The land of Punjab was the cradle of civilization. In 2500 BC, the Indus civilization flourished in this country in Harrappa, also known as the Harrappan culture. In 1700 BC, the Aryans came to the region, conquering the Indus Valley and establishing the Hindu Birhaman religion there.

The area remained part of the Persian Empire in 516 BC King Darius made a map of the world showing Sindh (Punjab) as part of Persia and calling it the end of the world.
It was conquered by Muhammad bin Qasim in 712 AD. The Mughals ruled the region from 1524-1739.
After the decline and subsequent fall of the Mughal Empire, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh was the most prominent ruler of Punjab. He founded the Sikh Empire which lasted from 1799-1849.
After his death, however, political chaos ensued and two of his successor maharajas were murdered in a succession struggle. After the Anglo-Sikh Wars, the British Empire seized power and annexed Punjab in 1849.

Location

The largest non-Muslim minority are Christians, with 2,063,063 adherents, making up roughly 1.9 percent of the population. Hindus comprise 211,641 people, representing about 0.2 percent of the population. Other minorities include Sikhs, Parsis and Baháʼís.
